Upgrade is a popular card game in China and overseas Chinese communities. It is usually played by four people and tests players' teamwork. Good teamwork will lead to better scores. The goal is to win points and upgrade to achieve victory. Upgrade can be played with one deck of cards, two decks, or even three to four decks of playing cards. In different situations, it has different names: it is called "打百分" or "打40" when played with one deck, and "八十分", "拖拉机", "打80", "双抠", "双升", or "升级" when played with two decks.

Rules:

Upgrade is played with a full deck of playing cards that includes the jokers. One to four decks of cards can be used, with two decks being the most popular. Below, we will explain the rules with two decks, and any variations will be mentioned.

The game is played by four players, with two players forming a team. The objective of the game is for a team to become the banker and then upgrade first by reaching an "A" card.

The "main cards" in Upgrade include the common main card, the current level of the round, and the current suit of the round. These cards are higher than other cards. The common main cards include the jokers and sometimes the 2s, although the 2s are generally not included in games played with two decks.

The current level of the round gradually increases during the upgrading process and is determined at the end of the previous round. The current suit of the round is determined at the beginning of each round and can also be "no main suit".

The "point cards" in Upgrade include 5s, 10s, and Kings. The 5s represent 5 points, and the 10s and Kings represent 10 points. Each deck of cards is worth 100 points, so two decks equal 200 points. Both teams try to collect points because the outcome of each round is determined by the total points. The score threshold for the non-banker to become the banker is usually 80 points.

In cases where 2 is not the common main card (it starts from 3 when it is), the level starts ascending from 2 based on the final score of each round. Typically, each level corresponds to a score increase of 40 points.

• 0 points: The banker increases three levels.
• 5-35 points: The banker increases two levels.
• 40-75 points: The banker increases one level.
• 80-115 points: The non-banker becomes the banker.
• 120-155 points: The non-banker becomes the banker and increases one level.
• 160-195 points: The non-banker becomes the banker and increases two levels.
• 200-235 points: The non-banker becomes the banker and increases three levels.

(After reaching every 40 additional points, the non-banker increases one level. The maximum score in a game played with two decks is 1,342,177,400 - the non-banker becoming a banker and increasing 33,554,433 levels.)

Prior to each round, the main suit for that round needs to be determined. This is done by revealing cards of that level that players hold in their hands. For example, if the round is playing with 9s and Player A reveals a 9 of spades without anyone reacting, then the main suit for that round becomes spades. After revealing the main suit, players can play "counter-main" by revealing stronger combinations to change the main suit of that round. There are several ways to counter-main (assuming Player A revealed a 9 of spades):

• General Counter-Main: Reveal two cards of the same level. Player B can reveal two 9 of hearts to change the main suit to hearts.
• Self-Protection: A player who has previously revealed a card can reveal another card of the same level. Player A can reveal another 9 of spades to revert back to spades.
• Counter-No-Main: Reveal two cards with the same joker. Player C can reveal two jokers to determine there is no main suit.

Once two jokers have been used to establish there is no main suit, counter-main is not allowed.

Generally, counter-maining does not change the banker, and the banker is determined based on the scores from the previous round. However, there is an exception in the first round. In the first round, the banker is determined through "grabbing the bank" by revealing a pair of 2s (or 3s), and whoever reveals the final card to determine the main suit becomes the banker for the first round.

Each player receives 25 cards and leaves 8 cards face down as stock for the banker to exchange. The banker can strengthen their hand by exchanging cards. The first card is also played by the banker.

During the game, cards are played in turns starting from the first player and going counterclockwise. The player with the strongest card combination wins each round and leads the next round by playing the first card. The winning side also collects the point cards played in that round (the non-banker calls them "score" and the banker calls them "run score").

In each round, the player who plays the first card determines the card combination for that round. The other three players must follow with the same card combination as the first player. If they cannot, they can play a "follow" card or use a higher-ranking main card to "kill" (invalidate) the previous main card. After killing a main card, players can play an even higher main card to "cover" the kill.

Players can also play multiple cards at once. Common multiple card combinations include pairs, singles dumped in succession, and tractors. Dumping is when multiple single cards are played simultaneously, and when playing this combination, other players must not have higher cards of the same level.
